Check It Out Before It's Gone: Parlor

June 26, 2017 by Nasha Vida

A few weeks ago I was struck by a colorful new mural covering the entire facade of what used to be a motorcycle shop on Valencia St.  Just a few blocks up from Four Barrel, Parlor is a temporary gallery/boutique created by a couple of local artists.  Self-described as "part community living room, part arthouse, part greenhouse, " Parlor is located in an airy and light-filled space that is gorgeously curated with works ranging from paintings and ceramics to lighting and furniture, and many plants.  It's definitely my kind of parlor.  I chatted with Jacob, a local conceptual artist who was manning the gallery the day I wandered in.  He explained that his friends created Parlor after learning the developers of the property wanted to do something different with the space while awaiting its fate as a new housing development.  It's not clear how long Parlor will be around, but in the meantime, they are hosting events and showcasing local artists' work.

My favorites from the shop include Windy Chien's Helix Lights, which bring warmth and texture to a simple pendant, and Ronald Chase's paintings.

Check it out before it's gone!
